XR Terra launches AR & VR Developer Program in partnership with Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology

January 16, 2020

With the XR industry (Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality) expecting to exceed $200 billion in market size by 2023 (according to Statistica), there is a growing need for talented XR developers to create applications and experiences in immersive technologies across a variety of industries.

The AR & VR Developer Program, provided by XR Terra in partnership with Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology (BFIT), uses a market-driven curriculum and project-based learning to prepare participants for high-performance roles in AR / VR software development.

This is a 12-week, part-time, hybrid program with online and offline components. It is open to applicants with a background in software development, including working professionals in Greater Boston, as well as current juniors and seniors in undergraduate college programs.

The program’s first cohort will start classes March 9th. On-site classes will be held on BFIT’s campus in Boston’s South End on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Additional online and in-person courses will be held on Mondays from 8pm to 9pm. Outside of this schedule, students will work flexibly and independently on homework, assigned projects, and online modules.

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion in AR & VR Development and 6 college credits from BFIT. In addition, graduates will have access to a variety of career services offerings ? including resume and portfolio review, networking, and interview opportunities ? through XR Terra’s network of employers.

“The partnership with XR Terra fits naturally into BFIT’s practice of delivering instruction that bears college credit and provides students the info & know- how to move right into jobs in Boston’s tech industry.  Qualified AR/VR technicians & engineers are in high demand and low supply—just the sort of talent gap that BFIT is good at closing.  BFIT is delighted to work with XR Terra on its unique project-based program for individuals who seek to advance in the exciting field of immersive technologies.”

– Tony Benoit, BFIT President

“ The AR & VR Developer Program by XR Terra in partnership with Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology is a one-of-a-kind program that provides a structured learning model fused with real industry projects to empower the next generation of AR and VR developers. While immersive reality has been an area of interest for many learners, most professionals in this field are self-taught. Together with BFIT, we are able to provide a unique pathway for professionals in Boston to become dynamic creators of this fast-growing sector, augmented and virtual reality technology.”

– Janet Kang, CEO and Co-Founder of XR Terra

The program focuses on Unity as the primary development engine, and, in class, students will have access to virtual reality headsets, augmented-reality-ready devices, and other hardware. Program participants will work with local companies on real prototypes that will address real business needs. This curriculum design will help students build a professional portfolio and gain experience working as part of an AR / VR development team.
